New test for Boyet

Bot Glorioso - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Actors influence people. They look up to them as role models. This drives them to seek public office as a way of serving people and initiating change.

One of them is Christopher de Leon (a.k.a. Boyet) who recently filed his certificate of candidacy as board member in the second district of Batangas under the Liberal Party banner. His concern for the environment and promotion of arts and culture fuels his desire to enter politics. Supporting the many projects of Gov. Vilma Santos is also in his agenda whether he wins or not.

Two years ago, Boyet lost in his bid for vice governor but he remains undaunted. He knows it’s time to take action to preserve Mother Earth.

“The whole place is beautiful and I’d like to keep it that way; the underwater, the forest areas and kabundukan should be taken cared of,” Boyet says when asked about his plans for the province.

Initially, he has done a move for marine life near his 7,000-sq.m. property in Lobo which faces the sea. “Napa-declare ko na ‘yung front area ko as a sanctuary. If you will see the underwater, the corals are beautiful. I dive every weekend.”

He is also focused on developing the province’s historical landmarks that would boost tourism and at the same time create cultural awareness among the young generation.

Does acting have to take a back seat for politics?

“Acting is my job while this (politics) is my way of serving the people,” Boyet replies. “Actors naturally have the charisma to persuade people to do things if we go out our way. So why not make that influence for progress?”

In fact, Boyet stars with Susan Roces on GMA 7’s ChristmaSerye, Sana Ngayong Pasko, where he plays Gordon, one of Susan’s children who grew up hating his mom for leaving them.

“I have worked with her in Mano Po but only in one scene. This will be our first time on TV (series) together,” Boyet affirms.

Susan’s intensity has never waned, Boyet states, especially in dramatic scenes that could make anyone cry.

“We work well. The chemistry is perfect. On-screen you should always be on your toes but off-screen tawa lang kami ng tawa, salbahe daw ako,” he shares.

That’s why even a veteran like him prepares before coming to the set. He memorizes his lines like a newbie, works out, and makes sure his wardrobe — from coat down to his socks — is all set. No wonder a lot of today’s actors are looking up to him and emulate his acting style.

“They (young stars) are more disciplined compared to us. Mga basagulero kami noong araw,” he quips.

Yet Boyet advises actors should give their all when it comes to work and the role “whether big or small, should leave a mark on your audience.”

Sana Ngayong Pasko premieres tonight on GMA 7.
