A voice for change

MANILA, Philippines - Music is a form of expression. For others, it’s a vehicle for change. This is why the brains behind the youth festival A Voice for a Better Life decided to step forward and be recognized.

“The (festival) is non-political,” says Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population Development (PLCPD) director Rom Dongeto. “There will be no political speeches during the event. There‘s no campaigning.”

If the participating artists campaign for something else, it will be on issues that concern the youth, the festival’s thrust and stakeholders.

Health and education, adds PLCPD executive director Mon San Pascual, are among the issues that need to be addressed.

A Voice for a Better Life is a movement that empowers young people to discuss their problems and find ways to solve them.

“If you act on something, I think it’s already a political act,” shares comedian-artist Tado of Dakila. ”But if what you do is pampa-pogi lang, it’s a different story. We believe in a voice for a better life.”

Also seen in the event were KaTwo, Kiko and Biboy Renia of Duster, FMD and Join the Club, respectively.

A Voice for a Better Life helps the young and the young-at-heart to find their own voice amidst the changing landscape of today’s socio-political milieu.

They can do that by heading to the youth fest cum music marathon and TV event on Oct. 23 at SM Mall of Asia’s San Miguel by the Bay.

They will be treated to the music of The Dawn, Sugarfree, Kenyo, Sandwich, The Jerks, Duster, Cambio, Radioactive Sago, Heber Bartolome, Moonstar 88, Imago, Color It Red, Jess Santiago, Paraluman, FMD, 6Cyclemind, Tropical Depression, Kjwan, Chilitees, Peryodiko, Tatsulok, Pedicab, Join the Club, Nico and Carlo, Camerawalls and Aurora.

Their songs will uplift everyone’s spirits and highlight positive values to move the youth into action for their future.

Before the jamming begins, participants can come as early as 1 p.m. to check out the booths, exhibits and symposia to know first hand the causes A Voice for a Better Life stands for. They can even join the games.

The event will be aired as a two-hour TV special on TV5 on Nov. 7, 9 p.m.

What does the event-TV special A Voice for a Better Life really offer the youth?

“(It will offer everything) from the arts, social service, entrepreneurship, sports and more,” answers TJ Besa of CommPulse. “(The youth’s) achievements and aspirations will be highlighted through songs, exhibits, video presentations and other activities set to thrill all the attendees.”
