Angelique (finally!) weds Nov. 4 in L.A. - FUNFARE by Ricardo F. Lo

The Philippine Star

Like other televiewers of RPN 9, you, too, must have been wondering whatever happened to Angelique Lazo who has been missing for one week now from the station’s Primetime Bali—ta which she co-hosts with Buddy Lopa. Yes, Angelique will be gone from the show (and from PTV 4’s Job Network which is aired every other Wednesday) until early next year, for a very good reason – she’s getting married (finally, finally!).

The wedding is set this Saturday, Nov. 4, 2 p.m. at The Church of the Holy Trinity in Los Angeles, California, the same city where in 1993, Angelique backed out of her wedding (to Manny Ayala, now happily married to somebody else) on the eve of the big day for a reason which Angelique hasn’t revealed until this very day.

The lucky guy is Ramon Mayuga, president of Basic Petroleum, with whom Angelique has been going steady for six years now. They met – and fell in love – more than a year after Angelique and Manny’s abortive wedding. Ramon is 50 while Angelique is in her late ’30s. A graduate of Ateneo, Ramon is a family friend of the Lazos, the son of the late Jose Mayuga and Mrs. Simona L. Mayuga (Angelique’s parents are Commodore Liberato Lazo, retired, and Mrs. Azucena Lazo.)

Angelique left last Saturday, Oct. 28, for LA to prepare for the wedding to which only the couple’s respective family members and close friends are invited. Reception will be held at the La Canada Flintridge Country Club, also in LA.

The couple will have their honeymoon in Europe (Rome, Paris, etc.) before they fly back home in January.

Dinner-dance in San Diego

Meanwhile, here’s a report from Funfare’s San Diego (California) DPA:

Max and Edith Ricketts, parents of Ronnie Ricketts, recently had a black-tie dinner-dance at their home in Blossom Valley, San Diego, California with more than over 120 guests, including many former Manila residents.

Before dinner, there was a mass honoring Our Lady of Peñafrancia, officiated by Fr. Chito Valenciano of Naga City. Donations raised during the mass were sent to the Peñafrancia Basilica Minore in Naga City to help build the outdoor pavilion.

Among those present were Dolly Santamaria Kahn, Antonio and Tessie Osmeña, Gerry and Maribel Gonzalez, Consuelo Kahn Haire and husband Tom, Mario and Marivic Kahn, Pierre Kahn and fiancée Marilyn, McKing and Suzie Alanis, Mila and Claudia Denton, Nanshi, Jessica and Jacqueline Ignacio, Carmi Ramirez, Tito and Nini Velasco, Dr. Edwin and Dra. Barbara Yorobe, and Augustin and Betty Nang. Greeting guests were Ricketts sons, Alex and Jason, along with Ricketts grandsons, Jamie and James.

Unable to attend were son Christopher Ricketts, in Manila with his wife Beth, manager of the Manila office of Naldo-Ricketts Realty. Also absent were Ronnie and Mariz Ricketts who were busy with the recent opening of their restaurant, The Barn, in Quezon City.

Blossom Valley neighbor, Alphie Ellsworth, brought dozens of her popular homebaked hopia that accented the elegant prime-rib dinner catered by Ranch Catering of San Diego.

A light drizzle didn’t dampen the devotion during the garden mass, nor the enthusiasm of the dinner-dance that followed, with umbrellas at almost every table. Acclaimed San Diego opera singers Luigi Leuvano and Diane Caywood were accompanied during the indoor musicale by violin and piano. Edith Ricketts joined in, singing two numbers while adding a mini-fashion show, much to the delight of the guests. Well-applauded McKing Alanis entertained by singing during the dance portion.

The Ricketts operate a major independent real estate broker company – Naldo-Ricketts Realty – in San Diego, selling prestigious homes throughout San Diego County, including La Jolla, La Mesa and Carlsbad. They attribute their success to referrals and an assertive Internet presence.

Giselle starts her Hollywood journey

Also from the US comes a report that Giselle Toengi has started her own "Hollywood journey" by signing up with Buchwald & Associates, the boutique (meaning specialized) agency which handles the careers of some of the biggest names in Hollywood.

According to Funfare New York correspondent (and Filipino Reporter entertainment editor/columnist) Raoul Tidalgo, Giselle is determined to penetrate Hollywood, an admittedly herculean task. "But I can always try," said Giselle in an interview with Raoul.

Early last month, Giselle attended the premiere of the latest Richard Gere starrer, Dr. T and the Women, at the Siegfeld Theater where she had her share of the limelight – you know, her 15 minutes of fame.

"That was how long Giselle was held on the red carpet by photographers who wanted to find out about ‘the actress from the Philippines’," reported Raoul. "On her way out after the screening, Giselle found a paparazzo patiently waiting for her and it wasn’t only because she was clad in a furry Donna Karan leather jacket."

Giselle’s constant companion is her sister Avie.

"Earlier that day when Giselle had her hair done at Frederick Fekkai’s, she bumped into Dame Judi Dench at the saloon and, on her and Avie’s way out, they spotted John Ritter shopping. At the premiere night, the sisters found themselves in the next row with Richard Gere himself, Glen Close, Lauren Bacall, Sheely Long and other stars."

No, Giselle didn’t get to meet Gere because she and Avie, although invited, didn’t go to the post-premiere bash. The night was very cold and Giselle didn’t want to get sick, busy as she would be with several events lined up for her by her publicist.

In the meantime, it seems that Giselle is saying goodbye to Philippine movies. Hello, Hollywood?
