Unang ginto sa Rio Games kinuha ng American teener

RIO DE JANEIRO - Inangkin ni American teenager Virginia Thrasher ang unang gold medal sa Rio 2016 Olympic Games matapos talunin ang dalawang Chinese Olympic champions sa women’s 10m air rifle event.

Binigo ng 19-anyos na U.S. college champion si Chinese Du Li, ang gold medalist sa Athens noong 2004, pa­ra sa kanyang Olympic-record score na 208 sa ba­gong finals format.

Nakuntento naman sa bronze medal ang da­ting Olympic champion na si Yi Siling.

Naglalaro sa kanyang unang Olympics, ibi­­nigay kay Thrasher ang kanyang gold medal ni International Olympic Committee (IOC) pre­sident Thomas Bach bi­lang unang Rio Olympic gold medal winner.

Ang pinakabata sa walong finalists, nagta­yo ng kalamangan si Thrasher laban kay Rus­­sian shooter Daria Vdo­vina, tumapos sa pang-lima.

“About halfway through when I took the lead it kind of became clear to me that I was in con­tention for a medal, but I quickly pushed that thought away and fo­cused on breathing and taking one shot at a time,” kuwento ni Thrasher sa kanyang ini­sip sa gitna ng laban.
