Brave Casimero yearns to be among Filipino boxing greats

CEBU, Philippines - For Johnriel ‘Quadro Alas’ Casimero, his quest to be one of Philippine boxing greats has just started after his successful defense of his IBF light flyweight title against Mexican Pedro Guevara last Sunday at Mazatlan in Sinaloa, Mexico.

Casimero, along with his promoter Sammy Gello-ani and trainer Pingping Tepora, arrived to a hero's welcome yesterday following a fruitful campaign on Mexican territory where he grinded through a well-deserved split decision victory over the previously undefeated Guevara.

“My victory is just the beginning of my chance to be great,” said Casimero in a press conference at the Omega Boxing Gym along Juan Luna Avenue in Brgy. Mabolo, this city. “I know I still have more things to improve in my skills. I should be ready anytime to fight here or abroad.”

Casimero took the opportunity to thank all those who supported him, even as he also promised to work harder in a bid to keep his title for a long period of time. “I am very grateful with the support my team and my family gave me. It really helped me a lot during my fight,” said the pride of Ormoc City.

Gello-ani, for his part, said he is planning to send Casimero to the United States for further training. “He should not be contented. He should step up in his game so that he can defend his title more.”

Gello-ani was very happy with the outcome of the fight even if it was only a split verdict in favor of Casimero, who dropped Guevara in the first round. “It was a close fight. Some say it should be unanimous decision but the most important is we won the fight.”

Gello-ani, on the other hand, said Casimero will most probably defend his title next either in October or November at a still undisclosed venue. “I am not sure if it’s here or abroad, but I am confident of Casimero that he can answer any challenge anywhere he will fight,” the amiable 'Don King" of Cebu said.
