UC chess team scores historic 8-gold sweep in City Olympics

CEBU, Philippines — The University of Cebu (UC) chess team achieved a historic eight-gold sweep in the 2024 Cebu City Olympics at SM Seaside City.

Maria Kristine Lavandero, Symon Luke Lozada, Adina Vera Kwan, and Eujan Jessej Gestopa bagged individual golds in their respective categories.

Lavandero added gilt in the secondary girls team event together with Janine Glydel Rodrigo.

Ditto with Lozada in secondary boys team competition with Draker Lester Basaca, Kwan with Danika Rose Dakay in elementary girls and Gestopa with Ian Martin Caylan in elementary boys division.

The young but promising UC chess players are under the tutelage of International Master Kim Steven Yap of the Cebu School of Chess.

Their golden success earned them the right to represent the Queen City of the South in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet next year. - EBV
