11th La Salle-Ateneo golf classic , La Sallians dominate in Bacolod
CEBU, Philippines - The Green Archers scored a total of 80 points to runaway with the title of the 11th La Salle-Ateneo Golf Classic Cebu, which was played over the weekend at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in Bacolod City.
It was only the second time in the history of the tournament that La Salle won the overall crown. The tournament is usually held in Cebu, which has plenty of alumni from Jesuit schools with the presence of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.
Francis Gaston, a former national golf standout, led the La Sallians by taking the lowest gross honors for class A shooting two-over-par 34 points in the Stableford Scoring System.
La Salle swept class A as Cebuano Marco Mendoza fired a net score of 41 points for the lowest net plum while first runner-up was Paolo Rojas with 39 and 2nd runner-up honors went to Leonard Gonzaga with 37 points.
La Salle also swept classes B and C.
The lowest gross plum for class B went to Jun-B Bantug with 28 points.
Lowest net for class B was Patrick Lacson with 38 points. First runner-up was Joe Villanueva with 37 and 2nd runner-up honors went to Bob Coscoluella with 36 points.
The lowest gross honors for class C went to Rene Rodriguez with 18 points while Bro. Bernie Oca had the lowest net scoring a tournament-best 43 points. First runner-up was Johnny Sy with 40 points and 2nd runner-up was Nato Monfort with 38.
Mark Gaston shone brightest among the Blue Eagles by topping the open division, which used the System-36 format, as he scored a gross 88.
Lowest net honors went to Ateneo’s Rey Gaston with 70 strokes followed by La Salle’s Marc Christian Yu with 72 at second and finishing third was Fritz Gaston also with 72.
Ateneo will be hosting next year’s tournament. - THE FREEMAN
