Cebu braces for Ironman hosting Lapu-Lapu City to roll out red carpet in welcoming participants
MAKATI CITY, Philippines— This may be the fourth staging of the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines but a whole new experience awaits the 1,700 triathletes from all over the world with the battle shifting to the historic Mactan Island on August 5 at Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa.
More than the new venue, the city government of Lapu-Lapu under the dynamic leadership of Mayor Paz Radaza assures a fun-filled yet safe and secure competition.
“Today, as I witness the formal launching of the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines, I am proud as mayor of Lapu-Lapu City that this world class race has chosen Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa as the start and end point of this competition. I promise you the organizers, the athletes and your support crew that we will roll out the red carpet for all of you,” said Mayor Radaza during the formal launching of the event yesterday here at the Quezon ballroom of Makati Shangri-La.
Just like its hosting of the Davis Cup last year, hundreds of school children and the rest of Oponganons will again be giving the participants from 31 countries a warm welcome and cheers on race day not only in the streets but also in the 1.9-kilometer swim with some 30 colorful vintas round the area to cheer on the swimmers.
Leading the cast of contenders is two-time defending champion Pete Jacobs in the men's division and Belinda Granger in the distaff side.
After the race, a street party 'ala Rampada' will be held at night featuring local bands to treat participants to a relaxing night after a whole day of grueling battle out of the 1.9K swim, 9K bike and 21K run.
Sunrise Events Inc. president Wilfred Uytengsu said expectations from the World Triathlon Corporation in Cebu’s first hosting of the event is high compared to the first three stagings in Camarines Sur.
Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia also assured her full support from their end to make sure that the event would end up with great success.
Curiously, the Ironman Philippines coincides with Cebu Province’s 443rd founding anniversary.
Aside from the exciting race and fun-filled activities that have been lined up for the Ironman action, the participants could also look forward to the specially-crafted medals from no less than top Cebuano designer Kenneth Cobonpue as well as the Ironkids.
Cobonpue said the medal, which Uytengsu wants to keep everyone in suspense, is something to be proud of.
“I’ve designed something that we can be truly be proud of,” said Cobonpue.
The Ironkids, on the other hand, will be included in the Ironman Philippines for the first time. It will be held on August 4 mostly at the vicinity of the five-star hotel. (FREEMAN)
