CEBU, Philippines - Six teams will slug it out for hardcourt supremacy among Cebu-based architects as the United Architects Basketball Club (UABC) Corporate Cup Season 5 gets underway tomorrow at the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) gym.
“We hope that this coming season will be bigger, faster and better,” said 2011 UABC Corporate Cup president Gerome Camello during a press conference yesterday at Harold’s Hotel. “Also, I hope that the spirit of teamwork will reflect in every game.”
Among the competing squads are Boysen Paints, Megabond, Unitec, Multi-Line, Durabend and Davis Paints.
League commissioner Edelio S. Abellanosa said the tournament follows a triple rounb robin format, with the top two teams are the end of the elimination phase enjoying twice-to-beat incentives going into the crossover semifinals. The winners will then class for the championship in a best-of-three series.
Aside from bragging rights, the champion will be awarded with a beautiful customized trophy, a first of such kind in the five-year history of UABC.
For this season, Camello said they will add the Skills Challenge, which is patterned after that of the NBA system, during their annual All-Star Game that will be staged before the start of semifinal round this November.
“Given the format, it’s a very long tournament for us. Most probably it will end in December,” said former club president Josephil Partosa.
Formed in 2007, UABC is an organization created to provide venue for interaction among architects through basketball. The club’s primary objective is to foster camaraderie among peers in the architecture profession who share a comming passion for basketball. It also provides an opportunity to take part in friendly competition between peers and serves as an avenue for awareness and fellowship for those who are in the profession.
Membership is limited to architects and architecture graduates, this in part to promote the profession and provide a sense of community.
Backed with experience, commitment to the club and solid dedication of its members, UABC has been successful it its goal, so far.
During the opening salvo set at 1 pm on Sunday, Camello said last year’s top performing teams and individual achievers will be honored. The corporate sponsors will also be feted with plaques of appreciation for their all-out and continuous support that greatly helped the league grow bigger and better each year. (FREEMAN)
