CEBU, Philippines - ALA welterweight prospect Mark Jason Melligen did not live up to expectations after he was knocked out in the ninth round by veteran Argentinean Sebastian Lujan yesterday in the main event of ESPN2:'Friday Nights Fights" at The Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas.
In a report by boxingscene.com, Lujan punished the US-based ALA fighter by knocking him down four times before finishing the fight in the final 45 seconds of the ninth round.
Lujan, who was known to have fought great names in the welterweight division including two-time Mexican world champion Antonio Margarito, stretched his unbeaten streak to twelve since 2007, while it’s back to the drawing board for Melligen whose five-fight win streak came to a sudden red stop.
Against the favored Melligen, Lujan dictated the tempo of the match, leaning and pressing Melligen in the ropes before throwing a barrage of punches.
Lujan scored his first knockdown in the sixth round courtesy of a heavy right hand to the head of Melligen. Melligen recovered quickly and try to engage in a brutal exchange with Lujan, but the latter seemed to have the more volume of punches than Melligen.
For the second time, Lujan dropped Melligen in the seventh round and again in the closings minute of round eight.
In the ninth round, Lujan landed a series of punches that put Melligen down for the count. The referee waved it off and the ringside doctor entered the ring to check on the Filipino boxer who was badly beaten. (FREEMAN)
