8th thirsty cup football USC collects second title

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -

CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Carlos (USC) collected its second title in the 8th Thirsty Cup football tournament after trouncing Ateneo de Cebu, 3-0, to rule the girls 17-under division yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

USC's girls 17 players duplicated the feat of their 19-under counterparts to emerge victorious out of the 15 competing teams.

Samantha Su sparked USC's charge in their final match against Ateneo on the way to claim the coveted MVP honors.

Two out-of-town entries in San Carlos City and Dumaguete stole part of the spotlight. San Carlos City outlasted Springdale, 1-0, to dominate the players 10 category, while SG Bank of Dumaguete City edged out Bright Academy-Red via penalty shootout to lord it over in the players 8 class.

Spingdale-B, on the other hand, also made sure it will take home a champion's trophy after beating Ateneo de Manila via penalty shootout, 2-0, in the boys 12 final, while Mandaue Technical Institute frustrated Abellana National School-Pomeroy in the boys 14 championship, 2-1, also by shootout following a scoreless draw in the regulation period.

In the men's 40-above, Queen City United-B clinched the crown after outsmarting Hiroshi B,1-0.

Meanwhile, joining the elite list of MVPs were Bryan Inggasca in the players 10, Gab-Gab Villacin in the boys 17, JV Malinao in the boys 14, Gorio Balcicas in the men’s 42, Janice Villarin in the players 8 and Samantha Su in the girls 17 class. (FREEMAN)
