CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue and Talisay belles stayed unbeaten after four days of action in the quarterfinal round of the 6th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center.
Mandaue coasted to its third straight victory at the expense of Tabuelan, 25-9, 25-11, with the likes of Genie Sabas, Jusabelle Brillo, Danika Yolanda Gendrauli, Rachel Singson and Kennette Garces leading the charge.
Last year’s municipal cluster champion Catmon bounced back from a previous defeat and vented its ire on Minglanilla, 25-19, 25-16, while Liloan survived a three-set thriller against Alcoy, 23-25, 25-19, 25-14.
Sta. Fe surprised the crowd with an impressive 25-3, 25-15 victory over Pilar while Alegria finally joined the winners' circle after beating Tabuelan, 18-25, 25-12, 25-23.
In the men’s bracket, the Talisay spikers also remained unscathed after pummeling Moalboal, 25-13, 25-9, courtesy of RP team member Rhovel Verayo and Kennith Bensig along with Norvie Labuga, Kevin Casia, Ronald Moreno and Ronald Acojedo.
Last year’s city cluster champion Mandaue won by default over Poro, while Liloan pulled off a masterful twinkill over Toledo, 26-24, 25-21, and Moalboal, 25-6, 25-9.
RP Team member Jonrey Sasing spearheaded Mandaue's triumph along with Jade Becaldo, Jackie Yrog-irog, Ronald Melencion, Rowel Lato, Relan Taneco and Mike Abria.
Sta. Fe also scored a double after fending off Barili, 25-18, 25-19 before getting past Poro by default.
Carmen, on the other hand, whipped Bogo in three sets, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22. Bogo later recovered to slam Moalboal, 27-25, 25-13.
Aside from customized trophies and medals, the champion in both divisions will pocket P100,000, while the runners-up will get P50,000. – THE FREEMAN
