Regional Collegiate Games opens today

CEBU, Philippines - The battle for supremacy among the best collegiate athletes in the region begins today as the Regional Collegiate Games (RCG), formerly known as the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Meet, formally unfolds at the Aznar Coliseum.

Over a thousand athletes and coaches from Bohol, Negros Oriental, Siquijor and Cebu will converge in the Queen City of the South and vie for top honors in various sporting events featured in the three-day athletic meet.

The top performers will get a chance to represent Central Visayas in the National Collegiate Games slated from February 20 to 26 next year in Manila.

In last year's national finals, Central Visayas finished third overall but had a dismal haul of 33 golds, 42 silvers and 34 bronzes.

As usual, National Capital Region (NCR) emerged as the biggest winner with an imposing 173 gold, 42 silver and 40 bronze medals, with Region VI (Western Visayas) was a far second with a 40-75-54 tally.

PRISAA Cebu coordinator Ryan Aznar said they’re hoping to overtake Western Visayas this year and if possible train their sights on the overall championship.

Meanwhile, the games proper will commence tomorrow yet at different venues. (FREEMAN)
