Gatchalian lifts Magis Eagles to hairline victory at the buzzer

CEBU, Philippines - Josef Gatchalian lifted Sacred Heart School (SHS) - Ateneo de Cebu to a hairline win right at the buzzer in their 14-under encounter with Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Saturday afternoon in the 2nd BTC Cup at Banilad Town Centre.

As this developed, PAREF Springdale School continued to dominate the 14-under division by sweeping all its three assignments, while University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USP-F) and Philippine Christian Gospel School (PCGS) also showed some might.

The game between SHS-Ateneo 1 and DBTC 3 would have gone to an overtime play with their scores tied even at 8 when Gatchalian forced through the defense of the Bosconians and threw the ball in time for the buzzer and sank the winning basket.

Zach Elisha Go led the campaign for Springdale A, scoring 8 points in every game when his squad broke the backs of DBTC 1, 9-6, Academ Institute, 11-10, and Southwestern University (SWU), 10-7.

The USP-F young Panthers of veteran coach and former Consolacion mayor Camilo Go also flexed strong muscles in defeating Springdale 2, 9-3, and DBTC 5, 17-6, under the leadership of Clint Justin Remedio.

Remedio scored 8 points against the Bosconian Greywolves, and gave 3 points against Springdale with teammates Ancel Nebril and Edwin Jhun Villarta also giving as much in their scores.

Led by Lyonel Garcia, the PCGS 14-under team with The Living Christian Church surprised Sotero B. Cabahug (SBC) Forum for Literacy with a shocking 10-3 game. Garcia scored 5 goals with teammate Tristan Limchesing adding 4.

As of press time, 65 games were played yesterday at BTC when the inter-school 3-on-3 basketball tournament reached midway of the elimination games with the support of Cherifer "Tangkad Sagad" growth vitamins, Robinson's Supermarket and Nature Spring.

Like in the 1st BTC Cup last year and in the recent Summer League, the tournament continues to enjoy the support of Dimsum Break, Thirsty juices and shakes and Nike Athletic Club. (FREEMAN)
