Arcilla, Paglalunan in twin title duel, both reach men's singles and doubles finals of Cebuana Lhuillier tennis

CEBU, Philippines - RP’s top-ranked netter Johnny Arcilla and darkhorse Rocky Paglalunan gunned down separate foes to book two final tickets each via the men’s singles and doubles in the 3rd Cebuana Lhuillier Tennis Circuit yesterday at Baseline Sports and Recreation Center.

Defending champion Arcilla aims for a back-to-back titles when he tackles Paglalunan in the singles finale at 10am today.

Even if he enjoys a psychological advantage over Paglalunan, who is only seeded no.11, Arcilla downplays his chances of retaining his throne.

 “Di lang gyud ko mokumpiyansa ani ugma,” said Arcilla, cognizant of Paglalunan’s stunning upset over the second seed Elbert Anasta during the quarterfinal round.

Arcilla motored into the final round after overcoming a courageous challenge by his long-time rival Patrick John Tierro, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Like Arcilla, Paglalunan was also made to work to the limit before fending off Rolando Ruel in a three-set thriller that lasted for two hours and 55 minutes.

Paglalunan literally had to pass through the wringer before taking the first set by the slimmest of margins, 7-6.

In the second set, Ruel showed overwhelming superiority in pulling off a 6-0 shutout in the second set to forge a rubbermatch.

In the decider, Paglalunan was in full command to eventually boot out Ruel via a 6-4 decision.

Meanwhile, Arcilla and Tierro may be rivals in the singles class, but they could be a great team in the doubles event, paving the way for them to march into the championship against the tandem of Paglalunan and Ronard Joven. Their match is scheduled at 2 pm.

Jean Henri Lhuillier, the man behind the event who is also a devout follower of the ultra popular racquet sport, is also expected to make a double final appearance today after advancing in the semis of both the seniors 35 and 40-above classes.

Lhuillier is teaming up with long-time partner Jun Toledo in the 40-above class and with Randy Villanueva in the 35-above. (THE FREEMAN)
