Don't vote the way you'd bet in sports

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

With four days to go before we vote, I hope that you don’t treat the elections like you would place bets in a sports event.

Although I am much into sports, I don’t really bet much even for friendly wagers in golf, which many say is the reason why I can’t bring my handicap down.

While placing bets in sports is a practice that is acceptable like the cockpits and the boxing arenas where you hear people calling the bets even if such are held in ritzy hotel ballrooms, you can’t just vote on the basis of making sure that such would earn you more by doing so.

While going around on my own to campaign for my favorite senatorial aspirant yesterday morning, there were several people who asked if there was anything else aside from the leaflets and the comics that I was giving away. I told them, there would be more once the candidate is in the senate, but in terms of legislation and not money for voters.

There are also some who would vote for who is most popular. Their reason is that they would not want to waste their vote thinking that their candidate might not win just because of the survey results.

Well, everyone is free to choose who he wants, but voting just to be with the one who has the odds on him, doesn’t always end up with you winning.

Let us carefully study the platforms of the candidates and not decide on the basis of the popularity contests. In sports, you can bet ten and win only two on top of that if you are for the odds on favorite.

In our elections, there are no odds and you don’t claim your winnings in terms of cash once the winners are proclaimed. You claim winnings based on how they would run our nation and our local government units, so make a wise choice.

Several sporting events are lined up for the week-long festival to celebrate the launching of the South Road Properties.

Much of the events will be held this weekend with baseball and softball games, football, drag racing, flag football and more.

Of course there is also the attempt at a world record for fireworks that would be exploded. This is set at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Since this one won’t last for many minutes, a fireworks display is set at 9 p.m. that should once again light up the skies.

If you want a fill for sports this weekend, head on to the SRP and enjoy the action.

You don’t have to look around for those signs that are now on the headlines, if it were boxing that might have been a low blow.
