Still for football

If I still had the option, I would have worn soccer shoes instead of golf shoes, goalkeeper’s gloves instead of a golf glove and I would have dove for balls rather than swing at the tiny bedimpled balls hoping that they go straight to my target.

With the 10th National Inter-Club Football Tournament set to open this weekend, I once again feel sad that my playing days are over.

After I was found to have a herniated disc (L-4) three years ago, I have officially hung my jersey and given away my soccer gear.

This did not however mean that I would already be an outsider from the football community. Well I am not part of the Cebu Football Association, but I am so much a part of the Cebu Amateur Football Club, which is organizing the tournament, and still a proud member of the Queen City United FC team B for the 38 years old and above category.

For those who are not into what is happening inside the CAFC, the most bitter of rivalries is between teams A and B of our group hehehe.

The opening ceremony is set at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at the University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus field.

Aside from the usual presentation of teams and the other formalities that go with the opening ceremony, there will also be fun games that we expect will become a hit to the kids and the young at heart.

To my brothers from the CAFC, I wish you all the best and I hope that you will keep up the good work.

I can’t play in the games anymore, but guys, I still have both hands that I can use to applaud you for the great effort.

Many events are having a hard time taking off due to the lack of sponsors, but not the Kadaugan sa Mactan Island Tee.

If you take a look at the huge billboards that the organizers have put up at the MIGC, you’ll probably think that all is well with the economy as you can see a long list of sponsors.

Of course, these are companies and people, who are not just in there because they want to only advertise their products and services, they are there because they are friends of the organizers and are not merely proud to see their names emblazoned on the billboards, but are happy to support.

I played my first round yesterday along with my partner Col. Eldon Nemenzo of the Philippine Air Force and yes, the weather was great and the course was interesting.

In fact, very interesting that oftentimes I strayed off the fairways to take a closer look at the trees and hazards that dot the layout.

Next month, we have The View Invitational at Alta Vista Golf and Country Club and two weeks ago, the slots have already been filled up.

Yes folks, with more than a month to go before the annual member-guest event, the registration people are only receiving waitlisted entries.

The temperatures may be soaring, but it seems that it is never too hot to play golf.

MILESTONES: Happy birthday greetings to Garry Yusingco and Locelle Gabunada, who are both turning a year older today.

Tomorrow’s greetings go to my buddy Lord Seno and also to my friends Amparo Osmeña, and Dr. Evangeline Costelo.

More power to all of you!
