CEBU, Philippines - Cebuano chess enthusiasts gird up for one big battle ahead with the staging for the 2nd Mariano Dimataga Cup Open Chess Tournament on April 24 to 25 at the Lapu-Lapu City open basketball court.
The two-day event is part of the week-long celebration of the “Kadaugan sa Mactan,” the annual re-enactment of the historic Battle of Mactan during which the explorer Ferdinand Magellan was slain by the forces of local chieftain Datu Lapu-Lapu.
The qualifying round will be played on Saturday, with the top 16 advancing into the knockout stage on Sunday.
Aside from trophies, the champion will take home P6,000, while the second placer will pocket P3,000. The two semifinalists will get P1,500 each, the four quarterfinalists will receive P1,000 apiece, while the remaining eight qualifiers will get a consolation prize of P500 each.
The top performer in the kiddies class will go home P2,000 richer, while the second to fifth will rake in P1,500, P1,000, P500 and P300, respectively.
Registration fee is pegged at P200 for the open category and P50 for the kiddies class.
