Golf tournaments

It’s one day to go before the UP Cebu High School Batch ’84 Golf Tournament and I’d like to remind those who are joining and those who’d like to join that the tee off schedule will be from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The tournament will be held at the Mactan Island Golf Club and is open to everyone interested to join and help the school.

Tickets are sold at P2,000 each covering the green fee, caddie fee, snacks, dinner, and raffles.

I was told that there will also be giveaways for the participants.

As of today, I know of a few father and son tandems that have bought tickets to join the event including my fellow UP High alumnus Ira Kiener, who’s playing alongside his dad Johnny, one of nicest people in Mactan that I met early on in my career as a sportswriter.

Those who would like to join are encouraged to head to MIGC early morning tomorrow. The awards ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. at the clubhouse.

I received a text message yesterday from Freddie Salimbangon, youngest brother of Rep. Benhur Salimbangon of the 4th District of Cebu.

Freddie said that they are now gearing for the 1st Congressman Benhur’s Cup on May 23 at the Mercedes Plantation Golf and Country Club in the town of Medellin.

The entry fee is pegged at P1,800 and this already includes a complimentary overnight stay plus free lunch and dinner during the tournament day.

Freddie added that a residential lot in Greenville will be at stake as hole-in-one prize and several major and minor raffle prizes are also being lined up.

I had a chance to be part of the tournament committee of the MSY Cup a few years ago and I know how the Salimbangon family along with their brother-in-law, Carlos Yeung, would go the distance to give the players the best.

I’m sure the trip to Medellin will be worth it.

There are two more golf tournament coming in the next month that you might also be interested to take part in.

The 3rd Y101 Corporate Cup is set on June 5th at Cebu Country Club. There are no details yet, but many are already excited about it including our friends from Armscor, a regular big-time backer of the event.

On June 18 to 21, Alta Vista will be holding The View Invitational 2009, which is the annual member-guest event of the club.

Our committee met last Tuesday and decided that the entry fee will be pegged at P2,500 per player of P5,000 per team. Giveaways will be a leather bag and a jacket.

MILESTONES: I’d like to give my best wishes to Michael and Thelma Maxilom, who will be having their church wedding today.

Thelma, who works at Alta Vista, said that it is always best that their union will have the Lord’s blessings. I surely agree with you.

I would also like to extend birthday wishes to my good friend Marly Tapang of General Santos City and also to Doris Mongaya, who are both turning a year older today.

Advanced birthday greetings go to Trixie Gomez, Carlo Panganiban, and to my classmate Michelle Holganza-Aldemita, who are celebrating tomorrow.

More power to all of you! -  THE FREEMAN
