CEBU, Philippines - Juanito Uy and Carl Almario shared the top honors of the 11th UBS Annual Golf Tournament played Friday and Saturday at the Cebu Country Club.
U bagged the lowest net plum after shooting 15-under-par 57 strokes while Almario bagged the lowest gross plum by shooting three-under-par 69 strokes.
The 75-year-old Uy scored a gross 12-over-par 84 strokes. His handicap is 27 strokes.
Almario, a multi-champion in the annual club championships, scored nines of even-par-36 and three-under-par 33 then beat Marko Sarmiento in the countback to win the title.
Sarmiento, however bagged the class A title with his net score of 65 strokes. Nonoy Tirol finished a first runner-up of the premiere handicap category with a net 66 while Kim Kwang Seok took the second runner-up honors with his net 66 after edging Eric Deen, Wendell Yap, Kento Nakada and Ramon Sebastian in the countback.
Wayne Congmon ruled class B with a net score of 65 strokes followed by Dr. Peter Mancao as first runner-up with his net score of 67 edging Ernesto Siguan, Manolet Heredia and Atty. Julius Neri for the title. Siguan settled for the second runner-up honors.
Jose Suaco won the class C plum with a net score of 62 strokes while Joseph Yu finished as first runner-up with his net score of 65 edging Atty. Marlou Velasquez in the countback. Velasquez settled for the 2nd runner-up honors.
Cres Libi won class D with a net score of 69 while first runner-up via the countback was Ruben Almendras with 71 and second runner-up also with 71 was Antonio Dy.
Wellington Lim fired a net 62 to rule the seniors’ (60 years old and above) category. Douglas Gacasan was first runner-up with a net 65 while 2nd runner-up was Masatsugu Ochiai with a net 67 after he edged Eddie Ong and Atty. Francis Zosa in the countback.
The guest division title went to Sr. Supt. Dennis Canoy with a net score of 72 strokes. Victor Gocela was first runner-up with his net 73 and 2nd runner-up via the countback was Andrew Cañete with a net 74 edging Alex Yeo. – NLQ (THE FREEMAN)
