Beach volley, baruto festival today in Talisay

-

CEBU, Philippines – The inaugural Talisay Beach Volley Competition will roll off today at the landing site in Poblacion, Talisay City. The Talisay City Sports Commission through its chairman Councilor Rodi Cabigas is staging the event to add pomp to the annual “Takas sa Talisay” celebration commemorating the 64th anniversary of American Liberation Day.

“Everything is ready for the first beach volley tournament in Talisay. And we want to make our beach volley court to be permanent just like in Lilo-an (Wiggy’s Beach Resort) so in one way or another it will be one of the choices when there will be sporting events like this,” said tournament coordinator Edgardo Mabunay.

The competing teams include the University of San Jose-Recoletos, Cebu Doctors’ University, Southwestern University, University of Southern Philippines Foundation, University of the Visayas, Volley Velez, Beach Volley Spikers, and Ladies Spikers.

The champion will take home P5, 000, while the second and third placers will receive P3, 000 and P2, 000, respectively. Non-winners will not go home empty-handed as they will receive a consolation prize of P1,000 each.

Aside from beach volley, there will also be a Baruto Regatta Festival to spice up the re-enactment of the history event.

At least 50 entries are expected to take part in the regatta show. Depending on the number of entries, the race will be divided into two or three groups with the fastest boatmen winning the title.

Huge cash prizes await the top performers, while all the participants will receive goodies from race organizers led by David “Boy” Odilao. — Marigold P. Lebumfacil and Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)
