Cebu provincial sports and cultural festival 2008: Home sweet home as Liloan rules

CEBU - Hosting the Cebu Provincial Sports and Cultural Festival 2008 proved rewarding for Liloan as the host municipality under the flagship of Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco ruled the five-day athletic meet at home grounds yesterday.

Although Liloan just landed at second place in the elementary division with 90 points, it still bagged the overall championship, thanks to its secondary squad which clinched the top spot with 113 points.

Overall, Liloan tallied 203 points, relegating co-host Compostela to second with 152.5 points and erstwhile front-runner Bantayan to third with 144 points. Balamban finished fourth with 142 points, while defending champion Badian plummeted to fifth with a measly 124-point output.

Completing the top 10 finishers were Consolacion (107), Argao (87), Dumanjug (81.5), Alcantara (77), and Asturias (66).

In the secondary level, Bantayan trailed Liloan with 100 points followed by Compostela with 92.5 markers.

Balamban, on the other hand, retained its elementary division title with 93 points followed by Liloan and Compostela at second and third spots, respectively.

Most of Liloan’s golds were courtesy of its secondary boys baseball and volleyball squads. The Liloanons also topped archery, gymnastics and football events.

“I am very happy and proud of Liloan in winning the overall championship title this year. Especially our athletes and coaches who were aiming to really bring home the bacon and with their overall efforts they were able to get that goal. They really deserved being called champions,” said Mayor Frasco.

“Just like how the LGU and DepEd officials worked together to have a successful Provincial Meet, so did these athletes played together as a team to become champions, hopefully not only this year but in the years to come,” he added.

In boxing, Tuburan collected four golds in the elementary division courtesy of Rejan Rebuyas in the 25-26 kilograms, Christian Lucero (27-28 kgs.), Francisco Asendiente (29-30 kgs.) and Clarence Brigoli (33-34 kgs.). Borbon’s lone gold came from Elvies Daromio in the 31-32 kgs. category.
