Congratulations, Ateneo!

CEBU - With the numbers tilted towards the favor of Ateneo, La Salle’s defense of the title in the 7th La Salle-Ateneo Golf Classic at Cebu Country Club last Monday and Tuesday was like running joining a Formula-1 race using a pedal-powered car.

The final score somewhat said it all, 88-34 in favor of Ateneo, but then the Green Archers are not sore losers so we’ll just lick our wounds and try again next year as we have done in the past editions of the event.

I am not trying to justify our team’s loss, but with more players we could have done so much better. So, those from La Salle, who don’t want Ateneo to keep on winning this tournament, it would be best that you show up next year and in the years to come. It’s fun playing in this tournament.

The 7th La Salle-Ateneo Golf Classic was hosted by the One La Salle Cebu Alumni Association headed by Javy Quintos, who put up a very gallant stand in the highly-touted presidents’ match against Ateneo’s Tony Pineda.

Tony won it on the final hole in what was considered as the most-thrilling presidents’ match in the three years that this has been played.

Next year I look forward to seeing John Pages play in the tournament as I know he has been trying to hit some golf balls even if he is better known as a tennis player. John was this year’s tournament chairman.

One La Salle player, who I expect to do so much better next year, would be Bobby Martinez, who had to sacrifice his game this year as he worked day and night to make sure everything would fall in place for the tournament. Unfortunately this did not include La Salle keeping the title.

To all members of the OLSCAA board, congratulations for a good job of putting the tournament together despite the tough odds that you faced. Animo!

I wonder how it feels to drive a Volvo C-30. Maybe after Friday I’ll be driving one, not because I have the money to buy one, but because I am joining the 8th Charity Fun Golf Tournament this Friday at the Cebu Country Club.

The Volvo C-30 is at stake for an ace on two holes while a Yamaha Crypton motorcycle is at stake for an ace on all par-3 holes.

The tournament fee is P3,500, but this is not really an expense that would make you feel guilty after handing your payment as the proceeds of the tournament would go to very good causes.

Among the beneficiaries of the tournament are the Tzu Chi Foundation, Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation, Missionaries of Charity, and The Freeman Foundation.

Those who would like to give more than the registration fee are most welcome to do so.

This is a good way to share to the less privileged and you’ll also get a chance to win a great car, trophies, and wonderful prizes in the tournament.

You can contact the Cebu Country Club for details about joining the tournament. (THE FREEMAN)
