Largo scores big in Copa tennis tiff

- Sona Mae V. Povadora -
Team Cebu City ace netters John Francis Largo and Bernardine "Nino" Siso displayed consistency and style as they buried three of their opponents to lead the Cebuano conquest in the first day of the Copa de Manila Tennis Tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts.

An Arafura Games 2005 silver medallist, Largo of the University of the Visayas dispatched one opponent after another to advance to the quarterfinal round in the boys 16-under division.

Largo drew first blood over Manila's Homer Paolo Perez in a lopsided 8-2 win and continued to sizzle, demolishing Martin Ramos, 8-5.

He went on with his rampage as he pulled a stunner over fifth seed Mark Balsy, 8-5.

Siso of University of San Carlos Basic Education, on the other hand, lashed out Bruce Valenzuela, 8-1, and fellow Cebuano John Arnel Go, 8-2, who earlier got past Tsutomo Sukushima, 8-6, in the boys 12-under class.

Siso also humiliated Inno Canlas, 8-1, en route to secure a semifinals berth today against Juan Ferrer.

It was a walk in the park victory for Sally Mae, Nino's younger sister, who won via default over Joy Villa in the distaff side.

Sally Mae marched to the quarterfinals where she will face off Jasmine Tan Ho.

James Karl Cañete of UV advanced to the third round without even lifting a hand after his two opponents fail to show up.

Jacob Lagman of St. Benedict Childhood Education Center showed a sterling performance by blanking Junrex Mendoza, 8-0, and Bebot Orendain, 6-0, 6-0 in the boys unisex 10-under.

After winning over July Jaylosa 8-1, Macy Solon of Dumaguete City took the exit doors after losing to Bambi Zuleta, 6-4, 6-0, in the 12-girls quarterfinals.
