MANILA, Philippines — Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla has challenged politicians to choose between public service and business, confirming that several lawmakers and mayors are under investigation for acting as contractors, in violation of anti-graft laws.

On his radio program on Saturday, Remulla called out public officials using their positions to secure lucrative infrastructure projects.

The prohibition against conflict of interest under the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act covers Congress and local executives, he pointed out.

“Let’s set a standard of decency,” Remulla said. “Law enforcers are seemingly asleep, enabling these people to operate a construction company while they are in Congress.”

Remulla dismissed a common defense used by politicians who claim to have divested their business interests upon assuming office.

The Office of the Ombudsman is probing at least eight so-called “congtractors” linked to anomalous flood control projects nationwide.
