Olango-Pangan-an bridge project gets P60 million initial funding

CEBU, Philippines —  The proposed Olango-Pangan-an bridge project in Lapu-Lapu City got an initial funding of P60 million for phase one through the initiative of city lone district Representative Cindi King-Chan.

With an estimated total cost of around P300 million, the proposed bridge will establish a vital link between the small island of Barangay Pangan-an and the main Olango Island, connecting through Barangay Sabang in the south.

Just recently, the congresswoman together with her husband, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan and some city councilors conducted a public consultation discussing the bridge’s construction.

Residents expressed their gratitude for the proposed bridge and highlighted the significant benefits it would bring to their daily lives.

City Engineer Perla Amar provided insights into the ongoing evaluation of the shoreline area in Barangay Sabang to determine the optimal starting point for the bridge to Pangan-an.

Amar's site development perspective indicates that the bridge will have a width of three meters and a length ranging from 2.3 to 2.8 kilometers. Additionally, the bridge will feature shaded viewing decks placed at 500-meter intervals.

To accommodate small boats, the bridge will be constructed approximately two meters above the water level.

Also based on the proposal, access to the bridge will be limited to hikers, joggers, and bicycle riders, prioritizing environmental conservation by avoiding disturbances to domestic animals and birds in the nearby sanctuary.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will oversee the implementation of the said project.

The construction plans for the bridge are outlined in the City Council Resolution No. 16-0521-2022, which received approval in October 2022.

The resolution emphasizes strong support for the construction of a bridge connecting Suba, Sabang up to Pangan-an Island which is part of the mayor’s ten-point agenda, aimed at improving accessibility and convenience for local residents, particularly students who currently face difficulties attending classes due to limited transportation options during low tides.

“The Pangan-an-Sabang bridge holds immense significance as it reflects the current administration's commitment to connecting people and communities in Lapu-Lapu City, ensuring equitable access to government services," part of the resolution reads. — GMR (FREEMAN)
