CEBU, Philippines - The City Traffic Operations Management has reopened Leon Kilat Street for vehicle traffic on weekdays to address the traffic congestion problem following the opening of classes last week.
Leon Kilat and Colon Streets were earlier closed to traffic because of the dangers of falling debris from the ongoing demolition of the burnt Gaisano Capital building.
Alvin Santillana, action officer of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, however said that only two lanes of the streets were opened because of the fence around the condemned building.
Citom chief Rafael Yap said they could only afford to open two lanes because of the on going demolition.
“The Leon Kilat St. is closed during weekends because that is when the Gaisano Capital South management will do the exterior demolition of its burned building,” Yap said.
Santillana however said that they are expecting the situation to be back to normal by next month because the building demolition will be done in the middle of July.
“As far as I know the contract between the contractor to the Gaisanos kay July 20 or mid-July mahuman ang demolition,” Santillana said.
Santillana explained that for the moment they are allowing vehicle traffic on both Leon Kilat and Colon Streets on weekdays but Leon Kilat will be closed on weekends.
“We’re having the area in Leon Kilat during weekends because ang safety ra pod sa mga tawo ang among main concern ana why we’re doing it,” Santillana said. (FREEMAN)
