Collector dies in road mishap

CEBU, Philippines - A lending collector met his untimely death after he was dragged and ran over by a speeding bus during a vehicular accident on the national Highway of Barangay Poog, Toledo City about 5:50 in the afternoon on Wednesday.

The victim, Junrel Mahusay, 19, a native of Negros Oriental and resident of the said place was onboard a Honda XRM motorcycle bearing 2284GM which was driven by Ronnel Ravanes, 22, when it allegedly collided with another motorcycle before Mahusay fell to the ground and was dragged by a service bus.

Police said Mahusay and Ravanes were traveling on the national highway and was tailing an Isuzu city bus owned by the Gallo Mining and Heavy Equipment Company which is a contractor of the Carmen Copper Mining of Atlas Toledo driven by Vicente Gentallan, 42, of Barangay Poog.

The bus was traveling towards Barangay Lutopan.

Ravanes allegedly tried to encroach on the opposite lane without noticing the approaching Honda 125cc motorcycle bearing 4309YZ, driven by Renante Maasin, 32, of Barangay Sagay, which was traveling on a high speed.

Police said that Ravanes who was surprised upon seeing the motorcycle, hit Maasin, causing Mahusay to be thrown off the motorcycle and right onto the path of the bus.

Residents said that Gentallan failed to immediately noticed Mahusay who was dragged by his vehicle about eight meters away from the point of impact.

He already ran over the victim when he heard the residents’ shouting.

Mahusay and Ravanes were rushed to the Carmen Copper Hospital however Mahusay was declared dead on arrival while Ravanes was transferred to the Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City for further treatment.

Maasin and Gentallan are now detained at the Toledo City police stockade while the bus and the motorcycle driven by both suspects are already in police custody.

Charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and physical injuries are now being prepared against the suspects.  (FREEMAN)
