CEBU, Philippines - A state-of-the-art sanitary landfill, the first in Cebu and seen to solve for a significant period of time the garbage problem of Metro Cebu, will be inaugurated this morning in Barangay Pulog, northern town of Consolacion.
The 6.9-hectare landfill, which is built, owned and developed by Asian Energysystems Corporation-The Renewable Energy Company, welcomes cities and towns within Metro Cebu to use the facility. The owner assures it is safe and compliant with the necessary regulations and guidelines stipulated in Section 59 of Republic Act 9003 otherwise known the ecological solid waste management act of 2000.
In an interview with The FREEMAN, Susan Tunido, Asian Energysystems Corporation Vice-President for Administration, said that the new landfill will accept garbage from private garbage-collecting companies and from other neighboring cities and municipalities in the province of Cebu.
Those who wish to use the facility will have to pay specific ‘tippings’ to Consolacion, the host LGU.
Cebu City, which expressed interest to dump their garbage in the new landfill, earlier said they were asked to pay P700 per ton, which is now being studied by the city government to determine its cost effectiveness.
Cebu City eyes the Consolacion Landfill as a temporary solution to its garbage problem because it can no longer dump much to the Inayawan Sanitary Landfill since it is already full.
The Inayawan Landfill has already exceeded its lifespan in 2003. It was built by Japanese experts in 1988.
The city’s plan is to dump the garbage generated by the north district barangays in Consolacion, instead of the whole city, because resorting to the latter will require the city to spend over P3.5 million a day or P1 billion a year.
By recent advancements in landfill management and technologies, “Safe po ang landfill,” Tunido assured the public. (FREEMAN)
