Disco house killing: Prosecutor files murder charge against suspect

CEBU, Philippines – Prosecutor Marvin dela Peña elevated to the Regional Trial Court the murder complaint of the suspect in the killing of man while dancing in a disco house in Barangay Tungkop, Minglanilla at dawn of Oct. 17.

Dela Peña indicted Brigido Gobanes, Jr. for conspiring with Gary Caballero and Federico Baynas in the shooting to death of a certain Alex Basilan.

The police arrested Gobanes in a hot pursuit operation in Minglanilla. Caballero and Baynas are still at large.

Dela Peña recommended no bail for Gobanes.

Basilan was dancing in the middle of a crowd when he was shot by the companion of Gobanes with the use of a revolver.

According to Basilan's sister, Lilibeth Orbiso, 42, she and her friends attended a disco held for the annual fiesta celebration.

While the group was enjoying the night, they heard a burst of gunfire and the music stopped, followed by the scene of people scampering in different directions.

Orbiso then saw her brother lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

She immediately sought the assistance of her cousin Briem Lasola who owns a multicab so her brother could be taken to the Minglanilla District Hospital for treatment.

The attending physician, however, told them that her brother died of the gunshot wound.

SPO3 Razul Segismar, PO3 Roland Camello and PO1 Sean delos Reyes of the Minglanilla Police Station were assigned to investigate the incident.

They learned that before the shooting happened, Basilan lost his balance while dancing and hit one of the companions of Gobanes.

Police said that one of the companions of Gobanes shot Basilan without any provocation then fled with Gobanes onboard a motorcycle.

Upon further investigation, the police were also told that Basilan previously had trouble with Caballero. (FREEMAN)
