CEBU, Philippines - The position vacated by Cebu City Councilor Nida Cabrera in Barangay Luz has been filled by former councilman and now Luz barangay captain Rian Tante.
Tante was sworn in by Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama last Thursday as the new barangay captain replacing Cabrera who was elected city councilor last May.
Tante was the barangay’s first councilor so he was able to automatically take over the position vacated by Cabrera by virtue of the rule of succession.
Aside from Tante, Rama also swore in Lupon member Mariano Fernandez who filled in the gap at the barangay council left by Tante.
Fernandez was nominated by the council to be the seventh councilman as per Section 45 of the Local Government Code which says that “permanent vacancies in the sanggunian where automatic successions do not apply shall be filled by appointment by the city or municipal Mayor, in the case of sangguniang barangay, upon recommendation of the sangguniang barangay concerned.”
Fernandez ranked eighth during the 2007 local elections. He was also in the same party as Cabrera.
Tante and Fernandez are expected to deliver what the previous captain has started. The captain last year was awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Barangay Officials of the Year with three other city barangay officials.(FREEMAN NEWS)
