Lapu-Lapu mayoralty bets confident of winning in polls

CEBU, Philippines - All mayoralty candidates in Lapu-Lapu City are confident of winning in the election as the campaign period ended midnight yesterday.

Expressing confidence are mayoralty candidates Paz Radaza of Lakas-Kampi-CMD, Efrain Pelaez of the Liberal Party, Junard Chan of the Nacionalista Party, and independent candidates Virgilio Cano and Isabelito Darnayla.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) prohibits any form of campaign a day before the country holds its first automated elections.

In a separate interview with The FREEMAN, Lakas-Kampi-CMD spokesperson and candidate for councilor Harry Don Radaza said his party did not hold rallies yesterday but instead briefed leaders and supporters for the last time.

"We are maintaining a close relationship with leaders and supporters. We are in constant contact with them," Harry said.

NP mayoralty candidate Chan yesterday organized a human chain candle lighting in all barangays. This, according to Chan, symbolizes the call for a "no-vote-buying, clean-and-honest" election tomorrow.

Chan expressed confidence in automated elections.

Pelaez and his party went around to shake hands with everybody and met with leaders last night.

Pelaez said that his slate is poised for victory with the outpouring support that they have been getting from organized sectors.

Provincial Comelec supervisor Lionel Marco Castillano, in an interview with The FREEMAN, said he hopes voters would check the precincts where they will vote through the election officers.

On May 10, voters may verify their registration through the election day computerized voters list at their polling place.

Castillano said cell phones will also be allowed inside the precinct provided that it is not used especially to take photos of ballots.

He said that violation of this will be considered an election offense. Mobile phones could possibly be confiscated if an election offense is committed.

The Comelec officer also said the liquor ban is in effect until Monday and those who will be caught selling or purchasing intoxicating drinks may be imprisoned up to six years.

However, liquor may still be consumed in Department of Tourism-accredited venues such as hotels and inside the privacy of one's homes.

Cock fights, horse racing or any other similar sport and beauty pageants are not allowed. Giving and accepting free transportation, food and drinks would also be considered illegal.  (FREEMAN NEWS)
