CEBU, Philippines - Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday distributed two steel pushcarts, commonly known as “kartelya”, and five shovels to each of the 31 mountain barangays of Cebu City.
Osmeña said that the donated items can be used by the barangay officials in conducting minor repairs of their barangay roads and some other activities.
“Salamat g’yod kaayo mayor nga gipanghatagan nimo ang mga barangay bisan og wala mi mangayo kay magamit g’yod ni namo,” the barangay officials told the mayor in an informal gathering right in front of the City Hall at noon yesterday.
City Councilor Augustus Pe, Jr. who facilitated the granting of said equipment to the barangays said that the village officials did not ask City Hall to grant them with such steel pushcarts and shovels, but the city officials believe it would be useful to the barangay.
The city’s north district has 17 mountain barangays while the south district has 14.
Pe said the city only spent a little more than P100,000 for the donations.
“Barato ra man na kaayo ang mga kartelya ug pala,” said Pe, chairman of the committee on peace and order and safety. The councilor supports the activities of the farmers in both districts.
City Hall will also give the mountain barangays plastic hoses that could be used by farmers in watering their plants. — Rene Borromeo/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
