Police eye frat rivalry in Danao shooting

CEBU – Police investigators are eyeing fraternity rivalry in their investigation into the shooting incident that happed in sitio Mangitngit, barangay Sandayong, Danao City, at around 1:20 a.m. yesterday.

The victim, Dondie Batulan, 20, single, a resident of barangay Binaliw is now in critical condition after he was shot while attending a benefit dance together with his brothers and relatives.

SPO4 Edgar Gomez of Danao City police said that while the victim was enjoying in the middle of the dance floor, a gunshot suddenly rang out prompting the disco-goers to scamper away in different directions.

Batulan was later seen sprawled in the center of the dance area in a pool of his own blood.The victim’s relatives rushed him to Danao District Hospital for treatment, he was later transferred to a hospital in Cebu City due to his serious condition.

Witnesses told police officers that they saw the unknown assailant position himself outside the barrier of the dance area and then shoot the victim hitting him in the lower portion of his abdomen.

Upon seeing the victim fell to the ground, the assailant hurriedly fled. No one saw where he ran to.

Police would not say if the victim is a member of a certain fraternity but said they are conducting follow operation to determine the circumstances behind the crime. —Christopher Gabriel Bonjoc/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
