CEBU - Two people drowned while swimming in the beach in sitio Tawi-tawi, barangay Poblacion, Dalaguete town, last Saturday afternoon.
Superstitious locals were quick to blame spirits and “sea creatures” for the death of two.
PO3 Christopher Requina of Dalaguete Police identified the two fatalities as Bella Sylvestre, 25, and Reynante Molina, 19, both residents of barangay Caleriohan of the said town.
Based on the investigation by Dalaguete police the two were with other friends celebrating a party at the beach. After the group ate their lunch Molina and Sylvestre decided to go swimming in the open sea. Hours passed and the two were just found floating in the water.
Their friends tried to save them and rushed them to the Ildefonso Alcantara Memorial Hospital but they were both pronounced dead on arrival. Policemen officers did not find any signs indicating foul play but locals said the two were swimming in waters believed to be haunted by spirits, while others said it was “siokoy” (mermen) that drowned them.
The cadavers of the fatalities are now with their respective relatives. — Christopher Gabriel Bonjoc/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
