CEBU - A welder working on a docked ship of Sulpicio Lines, Inc. met an untimely death yesterday when the side flap of an iron ramp he was fixing gave in and hit him on the head.
Norberto Canas, 42, of Danao City was among those working on the iron ramp of MV Filipina Princess docked at Pier 5 yesterday morning when the braces of the side flap of the ramp unexpectedly gave in shortly before midday. The impact and weight of the iron flap killed Canas instantly.
Canas was a welder for R&S Construction based in Danao City for the past three years.
Cerillo Montoya, project in charge of R&S, said Canas was working to strengthen the ramp when the braces gave in.
The MV Filipina Princess was among the vessels of Sulpicio Lines, Inc. ordered rehabilitated following the sinking of the M/V Princess of the Stars last June.
Montoya admitted that Canas was receiving below the minimum wage but reportedly had Social Security System remittances. The employer also promised to shoulder the burial expenses.
