Masters, doctorate scholarship programs opened for engineers

The Engineering Research and Development for Technology Consortium Universities in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology and the Science Education Institute will be implementing a graduate scholarship program for priority engineering and related courses effective this school year.

Funded by the national government, the agencies shall grant local master’s and doctoral scholarships, foreign doctorate and post-doctorate scholarships, visiting professorship grants and research enrichment program to interested engineering graduates.

The scholarship program is an implementation of research agenda aligned to the National Science and Technology Plan and Medium Term Philippine Development Plan.

It also aims to upgrade the qualifications of practicing engineers and engineering colleges as well as to develop further the culture of research and development in the country.

Qualified to avail of the program are those below 40 years old during the time of application and who either have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field.The applicant should also have passed the admission requirements for graduate studies at any ERDT consortium universities.

Universities acting as Study Placement Centers for priority Science and Technology courses are Ateneo de Manila University, Central Luzon State University, De La Salle University, Mapua Institute of Technology, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, University of the Philippines- Diliman, and University of San Carlos.

Scholarship privileges cover tuition and other school fees in both MS program and PHD; a research grant worth P200,000 for the MS program and P400,000 for the PHD, which will be released directly to the university; a book allowance worth P5000 per semester; Thesis or dissertation allowance worth P30,000 for MS students and P60,000 for PHD students; a monthly stipend of P12,000 for MS students and P60,000 for PHD students; and transportation allowance amounting to P10,000 per year.

The scholarship award covers two years for the masters program and three years for the doctoral program. After one year of scholarship, the graduate or the grantee shall render service to the government or refund the scholarship grants with interest. — Cressida Paula G. Delmo/JMO
