Two unidentified men took away around P200,000 from the father of Sibonga Vice Mayor Nestor Ponce while he was busy attending to his trading business in barangay Tubod the other day.
Eugenio Ponce, 73, of barangay Poblacion, Sibonga town was reportedly counting a certain amount to be paid to a customer who sells copra (dried coconut meat) when two unidentified men onboard a motorcycle pointed a handgun of unknown caliber at him past 10 a.m.
Sibonga police investigator SPO1 Arestides Carillo said that the elder Ponce is known in the area for trading goods, selling the items on his truck in the mountain barangays.
With the proceeds, Eugenio would buy copra from farmers who patronize his goods-and-groceries business.
Sibonga police along with elements of the Regional Mobile Group picked three people who were eventually released after witnesses failed to establish their involvement in the robbery.
Cebu Provincial Police director Carmelo Valmoria directed the Sibonga Police to “exhaust all possible angles leading to the identification of the robbers.” — Ferliza C. Contratista/MEEV
