Charter Day awarding moved to March 3

The awarding for the Cebu City Charter Day celebration on February 24 has been reset to March 3 to give way to a boxing match to be held at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The boxing match, dubbed as "Moment of Truth" will feature Filipino boxers Z "The Dream" Gorres and Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista fighting Mexican boxer Fernando Montiel and Colombian boxer Feider Viloria, respectively.

Gorres and Bautista made a courtesy call to the mayor at the City Hall yesterday morning, creating a stir among employees of the City Hall and people who were doing business there.

This Saturday, Cebu City will be celebrating its 70th Charter Day. The usual highlight of the activity is the giving of awards and special citations to people and companies/groups that contributed to the city's growth and development.

On top of the list of awardees are industrialist Norberto Quisumbing Jr., head of Norkis Group of Companies, who will be recognized as an adopted son of Cebu City, and Manuel Rodriguez Jr., the father of the Philippine print making, will receive the Rajah Humabon award.

All in all, the awards will be given to 24 people and 15 groups/companies that have made significant contributions to the city's development.

Earlier, the city council questioned Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña's mechanics in choosing the awardees, but the mayor put his foot down on this one.

"It's the mayor's choice and there is no mechanics," he said. - Wenna A. Berondo/BRP
