Illegal fisher killed by own dynamite

A 42-year-old fisherman who frequently fished through illegal means was killed after the dynamite stick he was going to throw into the sea exploded in his hand in sitio Maya, Daanbantayan town, last Monday morning.

Sandy Cañete, a resident of the place, was declared dead on arrival at the Daanbantayan District Hospital after sustaining multiple injuries in different parts of his body

Personnel of the said hospital told the police about the incident after the relatives of the victim brought him there.

SPO1 Cesar Alburo said based on their investigation Cañete left his house to go fishing at 10 a.m. with a bundle of dynamite.

Later in his boat offshore he saw a school of fish and lit the dynamite, he was about to throw it into the sea when it exploded in his hand.

PO2 Jovito Aballe said the right portion of Cañete's body was badly mangled as a result of the explosion. - Norvie S. Misa
