Danao starts info drive on solid waste facility

Officials of barangay Maslog in Danao City have conducted information drive among residents about the proposed construction of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility that the provincial government is constructing in the barangay this year.

Maslog barangay captain Josefina Quiros said Mayor Ramon "Nito" Durano III and the City Council accepted the project when Governor Gwen Garcia offered it during a meeting last year.

According to Quiros, there is a need to educate the people about the project since it would bring benefits to their barangay. "Kinahanglan gayud nga maedukar nato ang mga tawo aron walay problema nga motumaw."

Quiros said personnel from the provincial environment and natural resources office and from the city would visit the sitios in the barangay to inform the residents about the project.

Garcia said the provincial government would help local government units comply with the Solid Waste Management Act to avoid possible charges in court.

Most northern Cebu town mayors have already pledged their support for the project, which will be used as common dumpsite for the towns of Cordova, Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela, Carmen, Catmon, Sogod, Tuburan, Tabuela and Borbon, and the cities of Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue.

Towns and cities using the sanitary landfill will have to pay a minimal tipping fee to sustain its operation. But they will not spend a single centavo to build the facility because the provincial government will shoulder the expenses for its construction, and for the collection of garbage from segregation to disposal.

A memorandum of understanding among local officials will be finalized this month for the project. - Jose P. Sollano
