LGUs urged to require ID cards for drivers

The provincial committee on laws looks forward to the full implementation of an ordinance, not only in Lapu-Lapu City but also in other local government units, requiring all professional drivers and conductors of public utility vehicles to wear identification cards when driving or operating.

The committee headed by provincial board member Antonio Almirante encourages other local government units to adopt a law, like the approved Ordinance 222-2005, requiring all professional drivers and conductors of PUVs -jeepneys, multicabs, tricycles-for-hire and vans-for-hire to wear identification cards when operating or driving.

The recommendation was made after considering that the ordinance is an additional security measure in regulating business and safety and or the promotion of the general welfare of the public as authorized under Section 458 of the Local Government Code.

The identification cards will help authorities track down erring drivers and conductors.

The said ordinance penalizes first offenders P100, P200 for the second offense, P300 for third and the revocation of their professional drivers license. - Ferliza C. Contratista
