Dear Dr. Jen,
What is acne surgery? Will it take away my acne scars?
Ross
Dear Ross,
Acne surgery simply involves cleaning of blackheads, whiteheads, drainage of big pimples and maybe even injection of the fresh acne. This can be performed by a certified aesthetician or your PDS dermatologist. It is paramount that the person performing this intricate procedure knows the anatomy of the skin. It is more important to know when to stop manipulating skin so as not to cause further pushing of acne contents to the deeper layers. If unsure of the person doing this, just simply request not to do any pricking or manipulating and stick to just massaging the creams on the face.
Acne scars will NOT be improved by acne surgery. Acne scars can be treated by derm rollers or fractional laser.
Dear Dr. Jen,
How did I get athlete’s foot? How is it different from a fungal infection and what can I do to prevent if from coming back?
Jason
Dear Jason,
Athelet’e foot is actually the same as fungal infection. Fungus thrives in moist and covered areas. The sole and the areas between the toes are most often the places where fungus grows. You can get athlete’s foot from going barefoot in gym showers or other public showers. You can also get athlete’s foot if you put socks on feet that are still wet.
Always use flip-flops when using public showers. Before putting on socks, dry your feet thoroughly. If you’ve already got athlete’s foot, best to use antifungal creams or powders. It might be worth your while to have your feet checked. Athlete’s foot can resemble a flare of eczema too.
