Ways to cool off this summer!

- Kareen T. Saliente -
Whoaaaa!! It’s summer again! It is this time when you find yourself sweating even early in the morning, all throughout until the end of the day! Give yourself some time to cool off! Check out these 11 ways of beating the summer heat!

1. Choose white.

White absorbs heat than any other color. Avoid black; it will only make you feel hotter. Try white tees paired with white shorts to gain that cool and comfy look.

2. Go for flip-flops!

Allow your feet to breathe! It’s time to set aside those bulky sneakers. For an afternoon stroll or for a shopping, pair your summer get-up with flip-flops!

3. Freshen up your hair!

Your hair needs the right protection from the damaging rays of the sun. Freshen up your hair with the right shampoo and conditioner. For girls, tie your hair neatly in a bun or ponytail after a cool morning shower.

4. Drink a lot of water.

Always bring a bottle of water with you when you are out in the sun. We need to replace the loss due to sweat since on summer days, we tend to sweat a lot. Lack of water in our body can cause dehydration, which eventually causes one’s body to feel worn-out and fatigued.

5. Quench your thirst with a fresh buko juice.

You can always spot a buko vendor in almost every corner of the city. Buko (young coconut) juice is high in potassium. It also contains calcium and magnesium that help to substitute electrolytes. Moreover, it revitalizes the body specially on hot summer days.

6. Indulge yourself with watermelon!

This red, fleshy fruit (which is actually a vegetable!) is made up of eight percent sugar and 92 percent water! It is not only a good source of lycopene, which reduces the risk of cancers, it is also high in Vitamin A and C.

Tip:
Avoid unripe watermelons (watermelons that are pale green on the bottom); it is said to be acidic.

When you are at home:

7. Choose lighter shades for your curtains.

Go for a light shade for your curtains. Choose light blue or white; avoid bright colors such as pink, orange or yellow. It will only make the environment warm. Thin fabrics are preferable for curtains to let the air in.

8. Lush greens.

Indoor plants do not only add life to your house, it can make the whole place cool, fresh and relaxing, specially on warm summer days.

9. Squeeze a fruit drink.

If you are not a fruit-eater, then it’s time to squeeze those fruits into a healthy fruit drink! After extracting the juice, put some ice cubes in the blender. For fruits such as papaya, add a little piece of banana (it will lessen the bitterness caused by papaya) then blend it!

Additional tips:

10. Don’t forget the sunblock.

Always apply sunblock before going out into the sun. It protects your skin from the harmful UV rays. UVs are the invisible Ultraviolet A (UVA) and B (UVB) radiation from the sun. During peak sun hours (10a.m.-2p.m.) in the summer months, the UVB rays burn the skin.

11. Moisturize.

Our skin needs to maintain its moisture in order to stay alive and healthy. Choose moisturizers that are non-greasy and with natural ingredients to nourish the skin.
