Beauty queen tips from reigning Ms Mandaue and Miss Cebu Sian Maynard

- Jessica Ann R. Pareja -

Sian Maynard is now ready to turn over her crown, as the Ms Mandaue pageant is again in search for its next queen.

The half-Brit beauty Sian currently holds the two most prestigious local beauty titles, but she was crowned Ms Mandaue first before she was named Ms Cebu. It was winning Ms Mandaue in 2007 that initiated her to the world of beauty pageants.

How did being Ms Mandaue help her win Ms Cebu last January? “Ms Mandaue was a very big stepping stone for me. It helped me gain my confidence. Through the competition, I’ve learned about the mechanics of beauty pageants. I learned to walk and to talk, in preparation for the Ms Cebu pageant,” Sian answered.

Fresh from a trip to New York, Sian recently graced the Press Poolside Presentation of the present crop of beauties vying for Ms Mandaue 2008 at the Cebu White Sands Beach Resort. She hosted the affair together with television host and Ms Mandaue 2005 Anna Maris Igpit. That’s where The Freeman Entertainment spotted Sian and had a brief, post-event talk with her.

Sian is also giving her support to the committee of the pageant by being one of the speakers for the different workshops provided for the candidates of Ms Mandaue 2008.

Asked on what advice she can offer to these ladies aspiring for the Ms Mandaue or any beauty title for that matter, she said, “You have to make sure that you are yourself and keep your principle intact. Enjoy yourselves because these things will just pass.”

So what’s keeping her busy as of the moment? Sian said she still works a part-time voice actress, recording English books on tape. She’s also occupied with her responsibilities as Ms Cebu.

She had just gone to New York to visit the United Nations headquarters and checked out the available jobs. This De La Salle University graduate with a degree in European studies told The FREEMAN that her dream job is to work for the UN.

As for any plans of joining bigger beauty pageants like Bb. Pilipinas, she’s entertaining the thought, but definitely not this year. She explained, “I just to focus in my responsibilities as Ms Cebu for a year and of course, my work. Maybe next year.”

She revealed her projects as Ms Cebu: “I’ve talked with the girls (fellow winners) and we’re coming up with a fundraising for (Ms Cebu director) Junjet Primor’s dancers. We’re also planning to hold dance workshops for street children and small visits to the homes for the aged.”

She, nevertheless, shared what she intends to do when her “reigns” as Ms Mandaue and Ms Cebu would end. “I plan to find a stable job to pursue my Masters. I want to take Master in Peace and Development Studies.”
