June 3, 2006 | 12:00am
Ericsson Philippines, in support of Smart Communications, recently became one of the corporate sponsors of Pathways to Higher Education (Pathways), a non-government organization that aims to provide academic support to gifted public school students in need of financial assistance.
Pathways helps these students obtain college scholarships, prepares them for college entrance exams, and tutors them in science, math and English.
The NGO adopts a two-pronged approach that entails providing holistic formation to the scholars and their families, while training their parents to develop entrepreneurial skills through livelihood programs.
Smart Communications is currently a corporate partner of Pathways. Through its community partnership initiatives, Smart is involved in a number of projects ranging from environmental preservation and management, disaster preparation and awareness, housing and livelihood.
For its part, Ericsson actively participates in corporate social responsibility projects worldwide, with particular emphasis on disaster relief initiatives.
Ericsson Response is a global initiative aimed at responding to human suffering caused by disasters, supporting communications and giving relief when a catastrophe strikes.
It is a partnership with different organizations within the United Nations, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and other disaster relief organizations around the world.
