FNI unit ships first nickel ore cargo for 2026

Ipilan Nickel Corp. (Global Ferronickel Holdings’s Palawan subsidiary) commenced CY2026 operations with its first shipment of 53,912 WMT of 1.3% low-grade ore to China and is targeting at least 1.5m WMT of output this year, with a 53% low-grade / 47% medium-grade sales mix. Despite weather-related volume constraints in 9M25, stronger realized prices lifted Ipilan revenues by 11.8% YoY.

The early shipment signals normalization of operating days and improves 2026 volume visibility. While LME nickel remains pressured by Indonesia-led refined supply glut, Philippine ore pricing has stayed relatively firm due to tight feedstock availability for Chinese NPI and stainless producers. That said, realized ore premiums are highly dependent on Chinese demand and buying cycles; any slowdown in stainless steel or battery demand could compress contract prices, introducing greater earnings volatility for DSO exporters like FNI.

Key catalysts include sustained dry-season operating days supporting the 1.5m WMT target, follow-on shipments confirming ramp-up momentum, trends in Chinese ore imports and contract premiums versus LME nickel, and improvements in realized grades/mix.

Action

Operational momentum is improving, but we remain selective on nickel ore names given China-driven pricing volatility and capped LME benchmarks. We prefer gold-levered miners where macro tailwinds and margin visibility appear stronger, while treating nickel ore exporters as more tactical or trading-oriented exposures.
