Top Line strategy pivot accelerates progress to gas station goal

Top Line [TOP 1.17 ?7.1%; 108% avgVol] [link] is expecting to have 50 gas stations operated by its Light Fuels brand by the end of 2025, way ahead of its previous goal of building 30 stations by 2026 amid the success of its “flexible” and “disciplined” expansion plan. TOP said the upgraded target was a product of a strategy that “blends construction with targeted acquisitions to accelerate market reach.” TOP’s Light Fuels brand currently has 4 operating stations, with 8 more under “various stages of development” across Cebu. What helped TOP beat its initial expansion target was the recent acquisition of 38 stations from Total Oil & Gas Resources Inc. and Ballston Metro. TOP chairman, president, and CEO Eugene Erik Lim said the company’s growth plan also includes “expanding storage and import capacity to strengthen supply reliability, expanding our retail footprint to make our systems more efficient with economies of scale, and upgrading digital platforms to improve operational visibility and customer experience.”

  MB BOTTOM-LINE:  Top Line is going all-in on this new gas station acquisition strategy, which is a little different from the strategy it presented to investors back during the IPO roadshow. The market has absolutely loved the change, which has catapulted TOP’s share price up nearly 300% from its IPO price of P0.31/share earlier this year, but the real value of this move to shareholders will come down to price and execution. The company isn’t really going into debt (yet) to acquire stations as it’s largely used IPO proceeds to buy what it has so far, but even so, just owning stations doesn’t drive profits, so it will need to show investors that it can leverage this physical footprint into sales and that it can operate this expanded portfolio efficiently to protect margins.
