DTI Pangasinan urges MSMEs to practice green economics

Eva Visperas - The Philippine Star

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines — A Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) official in Pangasinan has urged micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the province to promote and practice green economy in their daily activities.

Natalia Dalaten, officer-in-charge provincial director of DTI Pangasinan, said MSMEs must be involved to enhance their competitiveness in the market and help the government counter the effects of climate change and adopt measures like reduce, reuse and recycle processes and approaches.

“MSMEs should come up with measures to conserve and limit possible waste of inputs in their business activities because for every product or services produced a certain amount of energy and resources are used,” Dalaten said in a report by the Philippine Information Agency – Pangasinan office.

She said DTI has listed some green economy initiatives in order to help MSMEs and the public observe climate smart and environment-friendly measures.

First, Dalaten said, waste from one production or consumption should be processed as new input just like in organic farming.

Second, she said, MSMEs should have eco-design products with regulating standby power that cannot exceed one watt when in off-mode.

She advised them to phase out incandescent lamps and replace them with compact fluorescent lamps to have maximum illumination and reduce energy consumption.

Third, Dalaten said, they should make sure to give their vehicle’s tires proper pressure for better mileage. Giving the tire proper pressure will also increase fuel efficiency and safety in driving, she added.
