The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - As part of its continuing advocacy for quality education in the Philippines, Toshiba Information Equipment (Phils.) Inc., in partnership with the Ayala Foundation Inc., recently turned over 300 brand new units of 32-inch LED TVs to the Text2Teach project for distribution to recipient public elementary schools in the country.

Toshiba began its partnership with Ayala Foundation Inc. through the donation of 440 brand new Toshiba laptop PCs to 44 public high schools in Laguna in support of the “Gearing-Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students” (GILAS) project.

“Toshiba believes that education is very important in nurturing the future leaders of the Philippines. I am glad that we are part of this continuing advocacy to enhance the quality of Philippine education,” said Fumio Otani, corporate representative-Asia, Toshiba Corp., and managing director of Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. Singapore.

Text2Teach is an effective teaching tool that has made teaching and learning more interesting and effective. This comprehensive mobile learning package uses cellphones which can download more than 300 educational video materials on Grade 5 and 6 Mathematics, Science, English and Values Education.

The package comes with a prepaid SIM card and a 32-inch Toshiba LED television that allows public school teachers even in remote areas to access educational materials as a supplement to their lessons.

Students can watch the videos using the Toshiba LED TVs and teachers can create lesson plans from the package. The latter meets local education guidelines and standards and are fully integrated with the Department of Education’s basic education curriculum.

The Text2Teach program has helped students to have higher learning gains and decreased absenteeism in public schools. It is now used in 736 public elementary schools nationwide.

Toshiba is guided by a corporate philosophy rooted in the concept of “Committed to People, Committed to the Future.” It seeks to contribute to society and to the communities in which it operates by supporting programs that promote social welfare and community development and provide science and technology education to the youth.
